Has anyone had any experience with Summit's brand of cams?

I bought the 2102 variant for my 283 after reading good things about them. Other than pre-build blueprint and degreeing I can't report until it's fired and run for a while. I have nothing bad to say about it so far.

I would call summit and ask them who makes their cams. They'll tell you if they are privately made or made by Crane or anyone else. If they are privately made I would shy away from that. Bump sticks are the heart of an engine. If one goes flat , it could be responsible for great damage. A few bucks saved is not worth that kind of hassle. Cams are not that expensive. But , It's a free country "so far"... But I would inquire first, Summit is a good company , I have bought a lot from both them and Jegs. So My advise is get informed and shoot your best shot.

I was at a speed shop and told the guy I was looking at a particular Summit cam and Crane cam, wanted to know the difference, he said this is what you're lookin for and handed me one that was neither, he had done my engine work, knew about my truck build, intake, carb, and heads.

Keep in mind with any flat tappet cam that they just released the new "SN" rating for oil (I think that's it). Anyway, this means almost NO zinc/phosphorous in the oil that helps lube older engines with flat tappet cams. SO get Valvoline VR1 conventional (non-synthetic) race oil or some other break-in oil (Valvoline VR1 is cheaper than most specialty break in oils) for breaking in your cam and use oil with a higher ZDDP content to keep your cam healthy (not necessarily as high as you want for proper break in). smile Good luck!

SN rated oils do have less ZDDP than earlier rated SM SL SJ ect.

I think the SM rated oils were allowed to have 1400 PPM ZDDP and this was dropped to 1000 PPM ZDDP with SN ratings

But only in some grades. I think 10w40 SN oils are still allowed 1200 PPM. Don't quote me on the exact PPM's or the 10 40 rating being exempt.

The ZDDP has not been eliminated, just reduced to protect catcons.

Diesel rated oils are exempt from these lower ZDDP levels.

Rotella and Delvac should have more than adequate ZDDP.

I've heard great things about VR1 too.

Reed will probably jump in on the lack of ZDDP flattening cams.

Hotly debated subject.

pretty stout to me! lol

Garry and Larry swear by Racer Brown cams. Wonder if they're still in business.
